10 Botox Aftercare Tips

If you’re considering getting Botox at Beyond Human’s office in Parker or Aurora, CO, it’s important to know what to expect in terms of aftercare. Take a look at our 10 Botox aftercare tips to find out more.

#1: Address Swelling, Bruising, and Stinging

You might notice a minor degree of swelling, bruising, and/or stinging after your Botox injection session. These issues are temporary. To reduce them, carefully apply an ice pack or cold compress. Applying Arnica gel can also reduce swelling and bruising.

#2: No Lying Down or Bending

For around three hours, stay as upright as possible and avoid activities like bending over and lying down. These activities can exacerbate bruising and increase the risk of Botox migration to another area of the face, reducing its effectiveness. Sleeping in an elevated position for the first night is also recommended.

#3: Stay Away from Hot and Cold Temperatures

After Botox at our Parker office, located near the Parker Arts Culture and Events Center and the Vehicle Vault auto museum, it’s important to avoid extreme hot and cold temperatures. This means no hot or cold showers or baths, no tanning booths, and no sun lamps. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and heavy sun exposure. Extreme heat can increase blood pressure, which can exacerbate post-Botox bruising.

#4: Don’t Apply Pressure

To prevent migration of your Botox, you’ll need to avoid putting pressure on your face after treatment. This means avoiding touching your face for the first four hours minimum. Don’t rub the treated areas, avoid facial massages, and make sure not to sleep on your face during the first night after treatment.

#5: Avoid Alcohol, Caffeine, Blood Thinners, and Herbal Supplements

To prevent dehydration and increased bruising in the treatment areas, alcohol should be avoided for at least a day after your Botox Cosmetic injection session at Beyond Human. Limiting caffeine is also recommended.

Additionally, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Aspirin and Ibuprofen, certain herbal supplements, and blood thinners should be avoided after getting Botox. Discuss any medication changes with your doctor beforehand.

#6: Stay Away from Cosmetics and Cosmetic Treatments

While applying or removing makeup, people often apply pressure to areas of their face, and this can result in Botox migration. Facials can also cause pressure, as can other facial treatments like eyebrow threading and waxing. These should be avoided, as should spray tans.

Tretinoin (Retin-A) products, when combined with Botox, can make the skin flaky and red and can result in breakouts. It can also make it harder for the Botox to settle, reducing its effectiveness. Don’t use these products for at least two to three days.

You’ll still be able to wash your face, but it’s best to do it very lightly and with mild-temperature water. Pat the areas lightly to dry them. Certain mild cleansers and moisturizers can also be used carefully.

#7: Avoid Exercising

It’s important to wait at least four hours before resuming your exercise routine, and many doctors recommend waiting at least 24 hours or even up to a week. Exercise boosts blood flow, which can cause Botox to drift and temporarily paralyze other facial muscles. Higher blood pressure can also increase post-treatment swelling and bruising.

Many aspects of exercise can result in pressure on the face, including wearing head or facial gear and wiping away sweat droplets. Changes in head position can also result in product migration.

#8: Don’t Fly

After getting Botox at our Aurora office, not far from Wings Over the Rockies™ Air & Space Museum, you’ll need to avoiding flying. Cabin pressure changes can potentially result in Botox migration and increased post-treatment swelling, so it’s best to wait a day or two before flying.

#9: Be Patient

While patients can see initial wrinkle-reduction results after one to two days, full results won’t be visible right away. Patients must wait for around a week to ten days to experience the injectable’s full results.

#10: Come in for Maintenance Treatments

Maintenance treatments ensure
that patients’ skin stays wrinkle-free. Additionally, it’s been shown that undergoing more maintenance treatments can cause age lines to look less severe whenever Botox’s effects wear off.
