What is BMI?
Body mass index (BMI) is a simple number calculated from your height and weight. It gives a quick estimate of how your weight compares to ranges that research has linked with different health outcomes in adults.
BMI is widely used as a first-look screening measure because it is fast and free — no equipment beyond a scale. It does not measure body fat directly and it cannot tell muscle from fat, so two people with the same BMI can have very different builds.

BMI is a screening tool
BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not directly measure body fat and cannot distinguish how much of your weight comes from muscle, fat, or bone.
Pregnancy guidance
Standard BMI categories should not be used to interpret weight gained during pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy weight is used to determine pre-pregnancy BMI.
What this means
BMI categories provide a general idea of your weight relative to height and can help guide health conversations.
